As the days are getting longer and the weather is getting warmer, your little ones are going to be ready to spend more time outside! For most children, spending time outside means hopping on their bikes and riding around the neighborhood. Whether it’s their first time riding a bike alone or they’ve been riding on their own for years, it’s important to remind them of some basic safety rules. In this blog, we’ll review a few important safety reminders for bike riding season!
What Bike Safety Rules Should I Teach My Child?
Always Wear A Helmet
Wearing a helmet is important for any aged bike rider! It’s also incredibly important to make sure your child has an appropriate-sized helmet. If you have a hard time getting your child to wear a helmet, try letting them pick out their helmet design and color so they are more excited about wearing it. Also, make sure you set a good example and wear a helmet when you ride your bike.
Where To Ride Safely
It’s important to explain to your child what part of the road to ride their bike on to ensure their safety. Teach your child to always ride on a sidewalk when they can. If there is not a sidewalk around, then make sure they are riding in the same direction as the flow of traffic on the far right side of the road.
Teach Hand Signals
Many parents forgo teaching their children hand signals, but utilizing these signals can help keep your child safe in high-traffic areas. Show your child these signals and use them when riding together to demonstrate how to properly use these signals. This way you’ll know that when they are on their own, they will be able to use them properly. Here is a PDF of the basic hand signals.
Appropriate Reflective Gear
When your child is going out for a bike ride, especially at night, make sure they are wearing bright colors and using lights. A small light or reflective piece on the front and back of their bike will make them noticeable to passing cars. A small light will also help them see where they’re going and avoid any rocks or roots.
Ride Together When You Can
Ride with your children when you can! Ride with your children until you are comfortable letting them go off on their own. Even after that, riding with your children from time to time will let you see if they’re following your safety tips and riding their bikes safely.
