Fundraising for Relay For Life: Linwood

Creative Learning Celebrates Relay for Life: Linwood, NJ 2015

Relay for Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, celebrated by more that 5,200 communities and 20 countries around the world. “Each Relay For Life event is special to its community, but the movement’s true power lies in the combined commitment of thousands of participants, volunteers, and supporters to help the American Cancer Society save lives from cancer.” – Relay For Life

The history of Relay for Life begins in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours straight around a track in Tacoma, Washington, raising $27,000 to help the ACS fight one of our largest health concerns: cancer. The next year, 340 supports joined the overnight event. Now today, 30 years later, the Relay for Life movement has become a worldwide phenomenon, raising nearly $5 billion towards fighting cancer. It truly is a moving, and memorable event every year – one that Creative Learning is proud to be a part of year after year.

For nearly a decade, we have collected donations at school for Relay for Life as well as participated in its annual event at the Mainland High School, here in Linwood. Before the event started here in Linwood, we participated in the Relay at Egg Harbor Township. Over the years, we have proudly raised thousands of dollars towards cancer research and treatment, through the donations of our wonderful students, parents and staff.

Many staff, parents and students here at Creative Learning have been touched directly by this terrible disease, and as such we have tried to do our part each year in raising not only money for research, but also awareness. At last years event, our children lead the Survivors Walk and one of our esteemed alumni read a poem in honor of all of those past and present that have been directly affected by cancer. We are extremely proud of our students and families for helping our such an amazing cause.

This year we have posted flowers along the walls of our hallway representing each classroom. The flowers will begin with no pedals, but with every dollar donated, that child will get to write their name on a brightly color flower pedal and attach it to the flower, giving a visual representation of the efforts of our families. We are hoping to reach a goal of $2,000 this year, and with your generosity and help, we believe that goal is certainly atainable.

Members of our staff will participate in the actual Relay event on June 12th at Mainland, however at the culmination of the fundraising efforts, on June 11th and 12th, we will hold our Annual Relay Recess here at school. The children will enjoy a fun-filled day on the playground participating in many special activities including: relay races, ball tosses, hula hoop games, and our own age-appropriate versions of volleyball and soccer.

We are so excited about the next few weeks, and we thank all of our caring and dedicated Creative Learning families in advance for your cooperation and participation.
