The Easter Egg by Jan Brett

Children’s Author/Illustrator Jan Brett

Jan Brett is one of the nation’s foremost author/illustrators of children’s books. Currently, she has over thirty-nine million books in print! Growing up near the ocean in Massachusetts, Jan decided to become an illustrator as a child and spent many hours drawing and reading.

“I remember the special quiet of rainy days when I felt that I could enter the pages of my beautiful picture books. Now I try to recreate that feeling of believing that the imaginary place I’m drawing really exists. The detail in my work helps to convince me, and I hope others as well, that such places might be real.” – Jan Brett

Being a lover of travel, Jan and her husband, Joe Hearne, visit many countries where she is able to observe different architectures, costumes and cultures from which she draws a lot of inspiration:

“From cave paintings to Norwegian sleighs, to Japanese gardens, I study the traditions of the many countries I visit and use them as a starting point for my children’s books.”

The Easter Egg

One of Jan’s books is “The Easter Egg”, a wonderful story about a rabbit named Hoppi who now is old enough to decorate eggs for the Easter Rabbit. If Hoppi can make the best Easter Egg, he will get to help the Easter Rabit deliver eggs on Easter Morning.

9780545364294_xlgHaving trouble to decide what kind of egg to make after seeing all of the other amazing eggs, Hoppi goes out into the wood to think about his egg. After thinking about it long and hard, Hoppi makes a decision on his egg, when a blue Robin’s Egg tumbles out of its nest. Keeping it safe and warm until the baby bird hatches, the Easter Rabbit chooses the empty blue shell as the best to reward Hoppi for his kindness.

This book is filled with both a great story and beautiful illustrations, crafted with dazzling colors and detailed artistry, captivating both parents and children alike as they see all of the exquisite scenes, eggs and characters: Flora Bunny, Aunt Sassafras and more. Side borders feature rabbits busy making their unusual eggs, and in the border above, the readers are held at attention with the drama unfolding for the bird’s family, and a surprise gateway reveals the easter rabbit to the delight of the children.

This story will definitely end up being a perennial Easter Book for you and your children, one that they will cherish and most likely, read to their own children when they grow up. Jan Brett will become an author/illustrator that you will look to get more books from. You can order a hard copy or download a version for your Kindle, Nook or iPad.
